Barbara A. Gaines, MD
Dr. Gaines is the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center and the Edwin Ide Smith Professor of Pediatric Surgery at UT Southwestern School of Medicine. She is also the Surgeon in Chief at Children’s Medical Center, Dallas.
As an academic pediatric surgeon with a primary research interest in pediatric trauma and injury prevention, her research group has extensively studied trauma-induced coagulopathy in children and the use of whole blood for pediatric trauma resuscitation. In addition, she is actively engaged in primary injury prevention research. She has served as the PI in multiple clinical/translational research projects, and has mentored junior faculty, residents, and medical students in such projects. In addition, she has served in multiple leadership positions in pediatric trauma including President, Pediatric Trauma Society, Board-President, Injury Free Coalition for Kids, Chair, Pediatric Committees of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma.
With a plethora of honors and awards in her name, her experience and expertise are far reaching throughout the US and abroad. To date she has published over a hundred papers and has presented everywhere from Pittsburgh to Norway.
