Dr. Xavier Sevilla MD, MBA, LSSBB, CPHQ, CPPS, FAAP
Dr. Sevilla is a primary care pediatrician in the West Coast of Florida.
He has a passion for Quality Improvement (QI), patient safety and practice transformation. He started his QI journey in 2003, when he was awarded the honorable mention of the Quality of Care Award from the American Academy of Pediatrics for his work on improving access and decreasing waiting times for the medically underserved patients in Manatee County, Florida. He also received the Award for Excellence in Health Care Improvement for this work from The Florida Children’s Quality Improvement Initiative in 2006.
At the regional level, he was faculty for the Open Access collaborative in North Carolina for The Center for Children’s Health Care Improvement from 2005-2006.
In 2006 he was appointed as a member to the Steering Committee of Quality Improvement and Management of the American Academy of Pediatrics. In 2009 he was appointed as the Chair of this committee. Since 2006 then he has represented the academy with various quality organizations such as the AMA PCPI, National Quality Forum, the Joint Commission and the National Committee of Quality Assurance (NCQA). In 2009 was appointed to the National Advisory Council of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality by then Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebellius. He also participated in the federal subcommittee that chose the Initial Core Set of Child Health Quality Measures for the CHIPRA legislation in 2010.
In 2012 he led the transformation of the AAP’s Steering Committee of Quality Improvement and Management to the Council of Quality Improvement and Patient Safety in response to the need to disseminate and spread quality improvement and patient safety to all pediatricians.
The Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) and delivery system transformation have also been one Dr. Sevilla's main interests. He was one of the Academy's representatives to the panel creating the joint principles of the medical home in 2007, and he was appointed to the advisory board of the patient centered medical home at NCQA for the 2008, 2011 and 2014 PCMH standards.
In 2012 he joined Catholic Health Initiatives in Denver as National Vice President of Clinical Quality where he was responsible for quality, service excellence and primary care transformation for the CHI physician enterprise. Since then, he has lead initiatives in quality improvement and delivery system transformation in Accountable Care Organizations, major health plans, large medical groups and integrated hospital systems.
In 2020, Dr. Sevilla became certified as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and is currently certified as a Professional in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety.
Dr. Sevilla still enjoys practicing pediatrics part time, serving medically underserved children in Bradenton, Florida.
