Carl Schulman, MD PhD MSPH
Carl Schulman, MD, PhD, MSPH, earned his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 1995. He completed his training in general surgery and received additional training in trauma and surgical critical care at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center (UM/JMH). Certified by the American Board of Surgery in general surgery and surgical critical care, his prior experience includes a two-year NIH Research Training Fellowship in burns and trauma. He also completed his Master’s of Science in Public Health and PhD in Epidemiology to enhance his research focusing on the epidemiology of burns and trauma. He is the Director of the William Lehman Injury Research Center at the Ryder Trauma Center. He has been awarded grants from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Department of Defense, and the CDC among others. His clinical practice includes Burns and Surgical Critical Care at the UM/JMH Burn Center. He has authored over 150 publications and is a reviewer for numerous journals.
Dr. Schulman has been PI or co-PI on numerous studies examining the effects of treatments or outcomes on trauma and burn patients with collaborations across varied medical and scientific disciplines including dermatology, nephrology, public health, and biochemistry and molecular biology. He was elected to and currently serves on the Burn Science Advisory Panel of the American Burn Association.
Dr. Schulman has done pre-clinical, clinical trials, and outcomes research in burn injury, including the first in human use of mesenchymal stem cells for burn wound healing. He has participated in many multi-institutional burn studies including those overseen by the ABA. Dr. Schulman holds the Eunice Bernhard Endowed Chair in Burns.
