Dr. Thelma Alessandra Sugrañes is a clinical geneticist with the Division of Genetics and Metabolism, part of the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital Brain Institute. She earned her medical degree from University of Texas Health Science Center/UTHealth Houston. Dr. Sugrañes completed a residency in pediatrics at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City. She then pursued a fellowship in medical genetics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center/New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. Her clinical interests include clinical genetics, dysmorphology and childhood cancer predisposition.

Dr. Sugrañes is board certified in general pediatrics and clinical genetics and genomics. She is a fellow of the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG). She also acts as a research mentor to students pursuing a master's degree in human genetics at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals and she has presented at medical conferences.

Dr. Sugrañes is employed by Nicklaus Children’s Pediatric Specialists (NCPS), the multispecialty medical group practice of Nicklaus Children’s Health System. She is bilingual in English and Spanish.
