Byron Bernal, MD

Byron Bernal is a neurologist who graduated from Colombia's National University and Javeriana University. He currently resides in Miami, Florida, where he serves as a professor at Florida International University (FIU). For over two decades, Dr. Bernal has dedicated himself to brain mapping using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in children who are candidates for epilepsy surgery at Nicklaus Children's Hospital in Miami. He has published more than 50 articles in international peer-reviewed journals on topics related to the cerebral representation of cognitive functions, with an emphasis on the organization of language. He has also contributed to six books covering neuropsychology, evidence-based medicine, and radiology. Dr. Bernal has maintained a keen interest in consciousness since his residency years, when he met Dr. Alfredo Ardila, the last pupil of Alexander Luria, who is considered the father of neuropsychology.
