Shahab Shaffiey, Board Certified Pediatric Surgeon, Board Certified General Surgeon
Shahab Shaffiey, MD, MSc, is a board certified pediatric surgeon on the medical staff at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.
Dr. Shaffiey obtained his medical degree from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where he graduated manga cum laude with membership in the AOA medical honor society. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh. During his post-doctoral research fellowship, he worked in collaboration with Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh and McGowan Institute of Regenerative Medicine to help create a tissue-engineered intestine for children affected with short gut syndrome. His research lead to a first author publication in Tissue Engineering, national awards from the American Pediatric Surgery Association and Academic Surgical Congress, and invited lectureship at international surgical conferences.
He furthered his education by obtaining a master’s degree in clinical research through the prestigious Clinical and Translational Science Institute at the University of Pittsburgh.
Dr. Shaffiey completed his fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. His training included learning from leaders in complex surgical oncology, colorectal surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, and trauma. While in fellowship he helped create quality improvement projects for patients in the neonatal intensive care unit and on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Dr. Shaffiey serves on the hospital’s cancer committee, institutional surgical representative for Children's Oncology Group and a member of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Cancer. His clinical interests include complex surgical oncology, minimally invasive surgery and health care policy and outcomes research.
