Nicolas Kalfa, MD, PhD

Dr. Nicolas Kalfa is pediatric urologist and a pediatric surgeon, initially trained in Montpellier, France. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric urology at UCSF (San Francisco), along with observerships, including at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. His surgical training was supplemented by a PhD in molecular endocrinology focused on genital development.
Since 2011, he has been a Full Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery and Urology in Montpellier. His work in pediatric urology focuses on the management of children with hypospadias and Differences of Sex Development (DSD). He serves as the national coordinator of French Reference Network of centers for rare diseases of genital development, under the patronage of the Ministry of Health.
Alongside his clinical and surgical activity, he has conducted research on surgical techniques for these conditions, on their genetic causes, and on the role of environmental factors and pollution, leading to the publication of more than 180 scientific articles.
He has received several national and international awards, including the David Frank Medal. He served as President of the French Society of Pediatric Urology and as Vice-Chair of the Research Committee within the European Society for Pediatric Urology (ESPU).
He is an actual or former member of several scientific societies, including the Society of Urological Pediatric Surgeons (SPUS), the American Urological Association (AUA), the European Society for Pediatric Urology (ESPU), and the European Paediatric Surgeons’ Association (EUPSA). He also serves as a scientific expert for governmental health agencies and contributes to the development of bioethics laws.
